Joe Henry’s 2009 record “Blood From Stars” sees him exploring the realms of orchestral blues and jazz. Not only is Henry a Grammy Award winning producer, but also a well-respected and prolific artist in his own right. With his evocative lyrics and soulful vocal delivery, Henry crafts a poignant narrative that stands as a testament to his terrific skills as a songwriter and lyricist. Supported by the likes of guitarist Marc Ribot and pianist Patrick Warren, the album leans into the darker and more raw sounds of blues – a departure from the expected Joe Henry sound to create something new but captivating all the same. Now available on 180g black double vinyl for the first time ever, the 2024 reissue includes five special “Live-On-Air” bonus tracks, recorded and broadcast live in Los Angeles on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” hosted by Jason Bentley on Oct 8, 2009. They allow the listener to get even closer to Henry’s powerful words and melodies, making the reissue of “Blood From Stars” a great addition to any Joe Henry fan’s collection.

Few artists are at once artful and savvy enough to transcend the endless scroll, but over the past 18 months, LA-based indie-pop duo Magdalena Bay have used social platforms to dispatch their music, and what you might call their philosophy, in hypnotic, ephemeral bursts. A long trip through their feeds produces music videos in miniature, irreverent pontifications on the state of the music industry delivered via home video VHS aesthetics, and existential meditations on everything from International Women’s Day to the clone craze of the early aughts to the indefinite lifespan of plants. To Mica Tenenbaum and Matt Lewin, reality can be unmade, manipulated beyond all recognition; their project is as much musical as it is an experiment in pop persona and visual aesthetics. On October 8th, Magdalena Bay will release their debut full-length LP, Mercurial World, via Luminelle. Entirely written, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by the duo, Mercurial World proposes an abstract theory of time and explores the staggering “what ifs” that make up the human experience. Approaching reality as a construct allows Magdalena Bay to enact their own, one that is committed to nothing but expanding the possible. Even the album’s sequencing hints at the eternal: the first track is titled “The End,” the last is “The Beginning,” forming a perfect loop when you listen to it straight through. “Matt, Matt, wake up!” Tenenbaum whispers on the introductory track. “I was thinking about how there’s no true end to anything/ Everything comes from and goes to the same place: NOWHERE.” “Mercurial World has a lot of outsized themes on it, like destiny, death, and doing the impossible,” Tenenbaum explains. “It’s not exactly a concept album, but we love prog-rock, so we love a concept.” Tenenbaum and Lewin met over a decade ago at an after-school music program in their hometown of Miami, where they bonded over a shared love of Genesis and King Crimson, eventually starting a prog-rock band together that lasted until they moved away to college. The two reconnected after freshman year and decided to continue their teen rock project, this time in a radically new form that would come to be Magdalena Bay. “We started discovering all of this experimental pop music that pushed the boundaries of what ‘pop’ really means,” Lewin says. Bleeding-edge producers like Charli XCX and Grimes were a gateway, and by 2019, Magdalena Bay self-released their debut collection, mini mix vol. 1, followed soon after by a slew of one-off singles, all of which arrived accompanied by tricked-out videos. “Those early references have gotten more and more dissolved as we’ve come into our own sound,” Tenenbaum says. “Our philosophy was just to throw things at the wall. I like to think that our music lives between genres.” In 2020, Magdalena Bay debuted A Little Rhythm and a Wicked Feeling, an EP that included the song “Killshot,” which went viral when anime communities on YouTube and TikTok created fancams and choreographed dances to it. When the band’s growing fanbase demanded a slowed down version of the track, the duo obliged. The EP landed them opening slots on sold-out tours with Kero Kero Bonito and Yumi Zouma, but when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived stateside, they were forced back into isolation, a state they fortunately thrive in. The pair met the moment; they upped their online presence and began streaming sets on Twitch, organically building a following while much of the world was stuck inside. “We spend all of our time together, and in some ways Mercurial World is about that particular sense of madness in containment,” Lewin says. “We live together and make art together; this immerses you in our creative, insular universe.” On the title track, Tenenbaum sings directly to her bandmate against a glitzy backdrop punctuated by chiptunish blips: “You’ll be around always/ Holding me down/ Living in a mercurial world.” The Madonna interpolation contributes to the sense that Magdalena Bay operate on a space-time continuum that is uncanny, at once familiar and not. “Many of the lyrics express anxiety about losing time,” Tenenbaum says. The high dramatics of “You Lose!” align with the penultimate, throbbing club track “Dreamcatching” as both reflect on the terrorizing realization that everyone eventually runs out of it. More specifically: “‘You Lose!’ is about the industry, and the anxiety that comes with trying to be a musician and maybe not quite making it,” Lewin says. Words like “anxiety” and “paranoia” come up regularly when Magdalena Bay describe their debut, but the production is beyond confident. Tracks flit between genre trappings with the ease of a band who reject the need to present any one way. “Hysterical Us” is propelled by sweeping instrumental flourishes that recall the blown-out aesthetics of a closing number in a way over-budget stadium set, while a snare snaps like a funkified house song on the bass-heavy “Secrets (Your Fire).” Their confidence overwhelms midway through “Chaeri,” when Tenenbaum pleads for forgiveness while a soundscape so vast and thunderous threatens to consume her. But even as they dabble in darkness, Magdalena Bay do so without ever dragging you down into it. You can hear the band’s reverence for Electric Light Orchestra in it, who they describe as “grandiose, but still cheeky.” The same descriptor can be applied to Mercurial World. On this album, Magdalena Bay offer the listener a prismatic experience, one that is built on a desire to simply believe in something beyond the finitude of our lives. It’s not religion, it’s not spirituality; it’s this music, this moment. The album closes with “The Beginning,” a discotheque ready call-back to “The End” that momentarily resolves all of Magdalena Bay’s late-night philosophical questions. “Matt, go back to sleep. I think I’ve finally got it all figured out,” Tenenbaum whispers. “Like a butterfly floating in amber, we've made this moment eternal.”

In a world so beautifully overrun by multifaceted pop artists, Aurora leads the pack. Singer, songwriter and producer: AURORA (born Aurora Aksnes in 1996) has proven to be a three-sided talent, and the Norwegian artist now has more than 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, her songs have been streamed an incredible 3.3 billion times, and she has sold over a million albums worldwide. Her fourth studio album "What Happened To The Heart?" has received wide critical and commercial acclaim since its release on June 7, with over 22M North American streams led by singles "To Be Alright," "Starvation," & "My Body Is Not Mine".
AURORA has described What Happened To The Heart? as her “most personal and cathartic album” to date, with each of the 16 tracks on this record tracing its inspiration back to a pivotal moment in April 2022 when the artist was first struck by the profound question, “What happened to the heart?” This query was ignited by her reading of the poignant letter We Are the Earth, a call to arms in the face of global warming. Delving into human anatomy books, AURORA sought to unravel the mystery of when and why Western culture lost touch with the deeper purpose of our most vital organ. Through her music, AURORA examines the loss of spiritual connection in modern society, underscoring the importance of vulnerability and advocating for reunifying the heart with politic and personal growth.
What Happened To The Heart? finds AURORA working alongside various new collaborators—including Ane Brun, Matias Tellez (girl in red, Maisie Peters), Tom Rowlands (Chemical Brothers), Chris Greatti (Yungblud, Blink-182) and Dave Hamelin (Beyonce, King Princess, Zara Larsson) among others—each bringing their own unique styles and depth to the project. Additionally, long-time collaborator Magnus Skylstad, who has been with AURORA since her debut album "All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend," returns to contribute to the album.
AURORA heads to North America for the What Happened To The Earth? Part 2 tour with stops in nine cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, New York and more.

Double blood red and white swirl colored vinyl LP pressing. How did Dexter make a TV audience sympathize with a serial killer? No question, it took an ingenious premise, great writing, great direction... and a stellar ensemble cast headed by lead actor Michael C. Hall. But long-time viewers of the show know there was another "character" that played a huge role in the series: the soundtrack. From Rolfe Kent's unforgettable title theme to the well-chosen Latin-tinged tunes that fit the Miami setting to composer Daniel Licht's brilliant themes, the score of Dexter commented on the action even as it amplified it's emotional power. Special mention must be made of the late Licht's work, which employed Latin and electronic elements to portray Dexter's warm and cold sides; among the favorites here are "Astor's Birthday Party" and the haunting "Blood Theme" that played over the credits in every episode.

Capitol Records and United Artists compiled these albums for U.S. release between January 1964 and March
1965.

Vol 4 of the MMJ Live series documents night 1 of My Morning Jacket’s 5-night 2010 run at Terminal 5 in New York City. Performing their debut album Tennessee Fire in its entirety plus a 7 song encore which includes covers of songs by Elton John and Jefferson Airplane..
Nobody Loves You Moreis Kim Deal’s debut album, although it’s technically not her first release under her own name – she self-released a 5-part, 10-song 7” vinyl series in 2013, and beyond that, she’s earned her stripes as early as the late 80s with bands Pixies and The Breeders.
The long-awaited record’s creation began with its oldest songs, 'Are You Mine?' and 'Wish I Was,' which were written and originally recorded in 2011 and included in said vinyl series, shortly after Deal concluded Pixies’ ‘Lost Cities Tour’ and relocated to L.A. In the years since, the record took shape in pieces, coming to light with a variety of collaborators, including Breeders past and present (Mando Lopez, Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson, and Britt Walford), as well as new friends like Jack Lawrence (The Greenhorns) and Savages’ Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan. Tracked over the last several years, the record’s last recording was helmed by iconic engineer and Deal’s close friend Steve Albini, tracking “A Good Time Pushed” with Jim and Kelley in November 2022. Sonically versatile and propulsively infectious, the resulting record is a celebration of Deal’s unmatched artistry, nodding not only to her career highlights with celebrated bands across the alternative landscape, but also to her immovable cultural weight.
Flat Duo Jets: White Trees [2024 Remaster] Fronted by the late Dex Romweber. The duo's fourth album was the first album of all original material. Produced by Caleb Southern, White Trees is a Jets' masterpiece that proved that Romweber could diversify his band's material without losing his recklessness and urgency. Dex passed away earlier this year on February 16th and this reissue is dedicated to his memory and legacy. Jack White from the White Stripes has called Dex and the Flat Duo Jets a major influence when starting out. White declared that seeing the Jets for the first time "opened up a whole new inspiration for me about the guitar." And he was downright effusive in the 2006 cult-classic Romweber documentary "Two Headed Cow", calling Romweber "a huge influence on my music... one of the best-kept secrets of the rock & roll underground." In 2009, White recorded a seven-inch with Romweber, and in 2011 he reissued the Jets' long-out-of-print 1991 album Go Go Harlem Baby on his Third Man Records imprint. "[White Trees] by North Carolina's Jets is a tarnished neo-rockabilly gem. Dexter Romweber's battered honk is the perfect voice to wrap around these twisted tales about Charlie Dick (Patsy Cline's hubby), UFOs, and dining with Van Gogh

NOTHING’s third full-length recording, Dance On The Blacktop, is the next chapter in the band’s tumultuous story and like its predecessors, pulls from all corners of life with a focus on the bleak and despairing. Captured by renowned producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, NY, Dance On The Blacktop is a stirring collection of songs accentuating the band’s love for all sounds 90s from both sides of the pond; from alternative rock and shoegaze to the realms of pop and post-punk. Across the course of 45 minutes, NOTHING weave together nine tales of heightened confusion, anxiety, paranoia, depression and chronic pain juxtaposed against angelic yet apocalyptic, reverberating walls of shimmering sound. Dance On The Blacktop is a fervent, emotional tour-de-force, the sound of a band at the peak of their individuality.

Smokey Vinyl. Razorlight were at the forefront of the indie-rock resurgence of the early 2000s, their biggest moments - 'Golden Touch', 'Somewhere Else', 'In The Morning', 'America' and 'Wire To Wire' - driving three Top 5 albums, nine Platinum album certifications, an NME Award, and live highlights including headlining the Reading Festival and performing at Live 8. After reuniting for live shows in 2021, the classic line-up - Johnny Borrell (vocals/guitar), Björn Ågren (guitar), Carl Dalemo (bass) and Andy Burrows (drums) - will release the new album 'Planet Nowhere' on October 25th, their first together since 2008. Razorlight preview the set by sharing it's first single, 'Scared Of Nothing'. Since reuniting, Razorlight have sold-out a headline tour which included a London show at the Eventim Apollo, and played shows as guests to Muse, Kaiser Chiefs and James. But as the ever ambitious Johnny challenged himself, "Who wants to be a greatest hits band?" So he hatched a plan, and late in 2023 booked a five-day session with the legendary producer Youth (The Verve, James) at his Space Mountain studio in Spain. Youth knew what they had to achieve, telling the band, "Razorlight's quite simple isn't it? Just a driving bassline, driving drums and a story." For whatever reason, things weren't that simple. After four days they had a stack of ideas, but nothing really worth pursuing. And then, as Johnny recalls, something remarkable emerged from out of nowhere. "I'd been down in the barranca, and came back up to find the studio empty. So I picked up this weird six-string bass/guitar hybrid I'd never seen before and wrote this thing. On our last night, I started playing it with the guys. The drums came in hard, the bass pounded. It sounded like shit. Absolute shit. But Youth was there, saying 'Can, Velvets, see where it takes you' and 'Why don't you try it like that?' But still, the track just wouldn't budge, locked in it's own inertia. Youth says, 'You're getting there, just one more' and almost instantly the song came out, from nothing to something, like a statue coming up out of marble." That song was 'Scared of Nothing' and listening back to the finished track, it's easy to see why it resparked Razorlight's mojo. Exuding taut, spiky post-punk energy in a way that's instantly infectious - the very traits that attracted highfalutin praise from NME back when they started out ("More tunes than Franz, more spirit than The Strokes, and more balls than nearly every band out there"). And as ever, Johnny demonstrates the swaggering, high-intensity charisma that took him from being a figurehead of the Camden scene to rise to become a Vogue cover star. It was also the track which unlocked Razorlight's creativity, leading the band to return to Spain with Youth for a second session earlier this year, during which they crafted an extensive catalogue of songs for the upcoming album. Other titles vying for inclusion include 'Zombie Love', 'U Can Call Me', 'Dirty Luck' and 'Cool People'. Since returning, Razorlight have also looked back on their initial achievements, first releasing 'Razorwhat? The Best of Razorlight' (complete with the new song 'You Are Entering The Human Heart') and then last month issuing the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of their breakthrough debut album 'Up All Night'. Never a dull moment. Writing a new ending for themselves, Razorlight are back to cast out the boring in your life.
When a musical family gets together to record, magic can happen and this is what the VAN ZANT’s are here for!
Brothers Johnny and Donnie Van Zant (respectively current lead vocalist of Southern Rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd and founding member of .38 Special) were able to find room in their busy schedules for the first time in 1998, recording their collaboration album “Brother to Brother”: a tribute to their late brother and Lynyrd Skynyrd original singer and founding member Ronnie. Such release was highly acclaimed between the press and fans worldwide and brought the duo to record a follow up album, simply entitled “II” in 2001.
Their collaboration during the years did not stop as they tapped their feet in a more Country-oriented style with the release of “Get Right With the Man” (certified Gold in the USA in 2005) and later on with “My Kind of Country” in 2007.
Now the brothers once again reinvent themselves, offering a Christian-themed album encompassing their Rock and Blues musical roots (and with a touch of Country for good measure). The result “Always Look Up” is made up of songs that will touch the listener’s heart and soul, with an emotional depth that is truly second to none in today’s musical landscape. Experience the soul touching that only the music from the Van Zant family, can provide. You will see why they are icons of the American South, and musical heroes to millions around the globe!

The package will also feature other tracks from the era, including ‘Light’, their collaboration with Little Dragon, and — on vinyl for the first time — a number of remixes from the likes of Hayden James, Lane 8, Beat Connection, Rüfüs Du Sol, and ILLENIUM.

Looking back, why did it take ten years to finally lure Waylon Jennings to the Austin City Limits stage for his first performance? Like everything else about the man, he did things his own way - when he was damn good and ready. Maybe it had something to do with that other Texas singer, that Red-Headed Stranger who shook things up in Austin and country music in general. Waylon wasn't sure what the fuss was all about (as he sang, "It don't matter who's in Austin, Bob Wills is STILL the King!") - Terry Lickonia, Austin City Limits
"Brighter days are up ahead," declares Dwight Yoakam on the title track of his new album Brighter Days (Via Records/Thirty Tigers), his first release of new original material in nine years. Written and recorded over the last three years, Brighter Days features 12 brand-new songs written/co-written by Yoakam, as well as two seemingly disparate covers of “Keep On The Sunny Side” by the Carter Family and “Bound Away” by Cake, artfully woven into the same body of work in the unmistakable style that could only be Dwight Yoakam. The infectious lead single “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom),” was written by Yoakam specifically for a collaboration with self-proclaimed Dwight Yoakam superfan, Post Malone.
At once timeless and timely, in fact downright cowpunk-tual, Yoakam self-produced Brighter Days, blending a modern reverence for the history of country music with the pioneering rock and roll spirit of California. The result creates a sense of craftsmanship and immediacy that captures the quintessential Dwight Yoakam “cool” that has separated the two-time Grammy winner from his country contemporaries since the start of his legendary career. As usual, Yoakam’s lyrics throughout the album are both deceivingly effortless and poignant. Brighter Days was mixed by world-class engineer Chris Lord-Alge and is slated for release Nov 15, 2024.
The exact relationship between Henry (T-Bone Burnett) and Howard Coward (Elvis Costello) remains ambiguous. They often referred to themselves as “One and a Half Brothers,” which might hint at their height difference or imply they were not actually siblings but were involved in an elaborate ruse.
Their musical partnership, known as The Coward Brothers, was initiated by Smiley “Doc” Snipson, who discovered Henry Coward in 1956 and signed him for a UK tour. The brothers' hit single, “My Baby Just Squeals (You Heel),” was followed by less successful records and a controversial Cold War-themed song. To preserve their fading fame, Snipson orchestrated their supposed death in a plane crash, but they were actually in hiding on a Caribbean island, secretly recording music and sending it back to Snipson.
When their funds ran out, they returned to Miami and made sensational claims about writing famous songs, leading to a brief stint as songwriters for Bill Bogguss. They later resumed recording, but their partnership eventually fractured, leading to years of estrangement.
Their music, from early rock and roll hits to later, more introspective songs, is compiled in the album, The Coward Brothers. After years of silence, their story was explored in a radio program, revealing the complexity of their relationship and their enduring bond. Despite their tumultuous history, their music remains a testament to their unyielding spirit.
The Coward Brothers are Elvis Costello and T-Bone Burnett. The Audible Original radio play, The True Story Of The Coward Brothers, is directed by Christopher Guest, and stars Howard Coward, Henry Coward, Harry Shearer, Edward Hibbert, Rhea Seehorn, Stephen Root, and Kathreen Khavari. Available at Aubible.com on Nov 21, 2024.

Bull & The Matadors have long been a staple on the northern soul scene. Their sides for Chicago's Toddlin' Town Records have lit up dancefloors at all-nighters for decades. Sadly, the label moved on from the group before it was ever released.

Upper Space is the new album from beloved Hip Hop DJ/Producer/turntablist, Rude One.
Upper Space was sparked when Rude suffered a serious burn out from his day job in NYC's ultra high-end interior design world. Moonwalking out of that life, and away from a $250k income, he retreated to a small apartment in downtown Cincinnati where he attended every Cincinnati Reds home game for a full baseball season. The remainder of his time was spent utilizing hallucinogens, running long distances, talking to his cats, writing short stories, and making beats that would ultimately pave the foundation for this project.
Upper Space is comprised of 9 songs featuring Rude's hand-crafted production specifically tailored for a select list of collaborators such as Valee, Stove God Cooks, Jeremiah Jae, Roc Marciano, RXKNephew, YNOT DUSABLE and more.
Upper Space is the official follow-up to Rude’s 2016 LP, ONEderful, which featured Your Old Droog, Westside Gunn, Roc Marciano, and Conway The Machine ahead of their stints as leaders of a stylistic shift in Hip Hop. Upper Space will be out via Closed Sessions on October 18th, 2024.

On the heels of his record-breaking third consecutive multi-week No. 1 single at country radio, ACM New Male Artist of the Year Nate Smith releases his sophomore album, California Gold. With this project, he’s proving that sometimes a second chance is all it takes to change your life. In the 16-track record, he unveils breaths of self-doubt, the sting of lost loves, and found loves that are too good for this world. Nate claims the project “is an evolution of my sound, but also an evolution of me as a person,” and is heavily influenced by “2000s bands like Lifehouse and The Goo Goo Dolls…It feels nostalgic but has a modern country context.”
The title of the project was inspired by a text conversation with an old friend who referred to the rain easing the Cali heat as “California Gold” – rare and therefore something to cherish. To Nate, the phrase unearthed shimmering memories of his upbringing in the California mountains where he stayed out too late, had his first kiss, and got into mischief with his buddies.
Nate reflected on the life he has lived since those golden memories, realizing a truth that this new record is proof of; there’s always California gold to be found. Everyone can discover what’s golden within them if they dare to dig. Most importantly, though, Nate wants people to know that it’s never too late to find it.

El Cabron is the second studio album from Texas-based country artist, Pug Johnson. The songs on El Cabron are simple yet three-dimensional, offering vivid glimpses into the stories and thoughts of characters who all tend to run on pure instinct, unable to escape their own depravity, all the while displaying a deep sense of self-awareness. Intertwining personal stories with fiction, Pug explores themes of corruption, desire, perseverance, love, loss, and then love again. Pulling from a wide variety of musical genres prevalent in the Southeast Texas region he calls home, Pug effortlessly mixes Tejano, Zydeco, Texas Swing, Honky-Tonk, R&B, Dixieland, and down-home Rock and Roll -- all behind a voice that is pure Country.
